THE YOUNG GIRL AND THE MONSOON tells the story of Hank (Terry Kinney), a photojournalist in the midst of a personal crisis. His long-time girlfriend, Erin (Mili Avital), a beautiful model thirteen years his junior, wants to settle down with him and have children, but Hank won't even introduce her to his teenage daughter, Constance (Ellen Muth), from a previous marriage. Hank`s devotion to his work as a photojournalist has left him at a distance from Constance, and she knows little about her father`s life. When she has to move in with him, both of them have difficult adjustments to make. James Ryan wrote and directed the film, based on his play of the same name. Ryan and his strong cast, which also includes Diane Venora as Hank's boss, and Tim Guinee as his professional rival, succeed in capturing the way intelligent New Yorkers of a certain social stratum speak and interact. But the outstanding achievement of the film is the performance of Muth as Constance. Much of the action in the film is explained from her point of view, and everything about Constance, from her speech patterns and moods to her posture and style of dress, rings true.
