Though burdened by its reputation as Hitler`s favorite opera, Richard Wagner`s comedic opera DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NURNBERG nevertheless earns its place as the composer`s most celebratory work. Set in 16th century Nuremberg during a Mastersingers contest, the story follows a love triangle involving Walther von Stolzing, a young knight, Sixtus Beckmesser, a clerk, and Eva, the local goldsmith`s daughter. Unable to resolve their emotions, Eva`s father declares that a singing contest will determine which suitor wins his daughter`s hand. The ensuing chaos as the Walther and Sixtus try to ready their entries and plot ways to end up with Eva anyway makes for an amusing love story. This production by the Deutsche Oper Berlin sets the action in post-war Nuremberg, which places an interesting spin on the work`s Nazi-era history.
