Italian director Ferruccio Cerrio`s action packed costume drama takes place during the 16th century, when Rome was flourishing during the Late Renaissance. However, in 1527, King Charles V of Spain sent a fleet of Spanish and German mercenaries to conquer Rome. Unfortunately, angry and frustrated by their lack of pay and poor living conditions, the mercenaries went far beyond simply securing the city for their king. The soldiers raped and pillaged the city, changing the course of the Renaissance during what has become known as the Sack of Rome.
