Notes from Underground
Dostoevsky`s revolutionary novella is a psychological exploration of the psyche belonging to a man growning increasingly unhinged as his alienation from the rest of humanity becomes complete; this cinematic adaptation brings one of history`s most important pieces of existential literature to life. Henry Czerny plays the Underground Man, a civil servant whose contempt for himself is paralleled only by that which he feels for the world around him. Arrogant and afflicted, he is nonetheless intelligent and extremely well-read, but holds the opinion that any such man in contemporary utilitarian society could be nothing but miserable when faced with the conditions of the world. The shame he feels for his life and actions finds an outlet in a video diary, in which he details his most troubling experiences, from dinner with old school friends whom he despises, to his relations with a prostitute, Liza (Sheryl Lee, TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME). John Favreau (SWINGERS) and Seth Green (GREG THE BUNNY) round out the extremely talented cast of this critically acclaimed Sundance Film Festival Official Selection.
