Mozart`s final opera, THE MAGIC FLUTE, is a fanciful affair, written as the brilliant composer was dying. It is a heartwarming tale of romance, in which two separated lovers are forced to pass a series of tests in order to be reunited. It is only with the help of a very special flute that they are able to succeed. This 1999 production takes place at the Opera Festival St. Margarethen and features strong performances from its stars Maxim Mihailov, Michael Kurz, and Birgit Beer. An ancient Roman quarry makes for a majestic backdrop, and the choral work of the Stagione d`Opera Italiana Honved Ensemble adds to the nearly transcendental experience.
